Doing nothing at all vs. making small consistent efforts.
The math is brutal.
(1.00)^365 = 1.00
(1.01)^365 = 37.7
Getting just 1% better every day for a year doesn't just add up. It multiplies.
This applies to everything:
Your skills at work. Your professional network. Your industry knowledge. Your leadership abilities. Your personal brand.
Most people overestimate what they can do in a day and underestimate what they can do in a year.
They try to make massive changes that burn them out in two weeks. Then they go back to doing nothing.
But 1% better is manageable:
Read one industry article. Make one new connection. Learn one new skill. Improve one process. Have one meaningful conversation.
The person who does nothing stays exactly where they are.
The person who improves 1% daily becomes 37 times better.
Here's what 1% better looks like in your job search:
Instead of applying to 50 jobs with the same generic resume, apply to 5 jobs with tailored resumes.
Instead of waiting until you have the "perfect" application, submit a good one today.
Instead of networking with executives who won't respond, connect with people 1-2 levels above you.
Instead of applying to jobs you're 40% qualified for, focus on the ones where you're 80%+ qualified.
Instead of hoping for the best, track your response rate and adjust your strategy.
Small daily improvements compound:
Week 1: You learn how to tailor your resume properly.
Week 2: You start getting more responses because your applications are targeted.
Week 3: You're having actual conversations with recruiters.
Week 4: You're scheduling interviews.
Not because you worked harder - because you worked smarter, consistently.
The trap:
You want results immediately. So you send 100 applications in a weekend. Get no responses. Feel defeated. Give up.
But the person who sends 5 quality applications every weekday? They send 100 applications in a month too. Except theirs actually get read.
Do this today:
Pick one thing to improve by 1%.
Just one.
Tomorrow, do it again.
Your career isn't built in a day. It's built in daily choices.
