When you're job hunting, it's easy to feel like you should be grateful for any offer. But a job goes both ways, you're interviewing them just as much as they're interviewing you. A bad-fit company can stall your growth or burn you out. Here's how to spot the good ones from the red flags.

Green flags to look for

These signal a place that'll actually invest in you:

  • They talk about growth and development. Mentorship, training, clear paths forward. It means they want you to get better, not just grind.

  • Low turnover / people stick around. Check LinkedIn, if people stay for years, that says a lot.

  • Clear, responsive communication during hiring. How they treat you as a candidate is a preview of how they'll treat you as an employee.

  • They answer your questions honestly. Including the hard ones about challenges. Transparency early is a great sign.

Red flags to watch for

These are worth taking seriously:

  • Vague answers about the role or expectations. If they can't clearly say what you'd do, they may not know, or it's chaos.

  • High turnover. Lots of people leaving quickly is a warning.

  • A slow, disrespectful, or ghosting hiring process. If they're disorganized while trying to impress you, imagine after you're hired.

  • Buzzwords that hide bad conditions. "We work hard and play hard" or "we're a family" can sometimes mask long hours and blurred boundaries. Not always, but ask follow-ups.

Do your homework before you accept

Before saying yes, spend real time researching:

  • Read reviews on Glassdoor (look for patterns, not one angry outlier)

  • Check how long people stay on LinkedIn

  • If you can, message a current or former employee and ask honestly how they like it

Ask the questions that reveal the truth

In the interview, dig past the polished pitch:

  • "Why is this role open?" (backfill vs. growth tells you a lot)

  • "What does success look like in the first 90 days?"

  • "How would you describe the team's working style and culture?"

  • "What's the biggest challenge someone in this role faces?"

How they answer, honest and specific vs. vague and rehearsed, tells you almost as much as what they say.

Balance the ideal with reality

Now the honest caveat: early in your career, sometimes you take the job to get experience and momentum, even if it's not perfect. That's completely valid. The goal isn't to reject anything short of a dream job, it's to go in with your eyes open. Know what you're signing up for, and know it's a step, not a forever.

The big idea

You're evaluating them too. Look for green flags around growth and honesty, watch for red flags around vagueness and turnover, and do your research before you commit. A little diligence now saves you from a job that stalls you later.

Do this today: Pick one company from today's list you'd consider. Spend 5 minutes checking their Glassdoor and how long employees tend to stay. Practice sizing companies up, it's a skill that pays off every time you get an offer.
