Nobody talks about this part. You apply, you hear nothing, you get rejected, you start to feel like something's wrong with you. The grind quietly chips away at you, and a worn-down version of you interviews worse. So this one matters.

Rejection is volume, not a verdict

500 people applied for 1 spot. 499 got rejected. That's not 499 failures, that's math.

A "no" usually means timing, headcount, or someone internal already had it locked. It's almost never a referendum on your worth. Stop reading it as one.

Set a cap and then close the laptop

The "apply until midnight every night" approach burns you out and doesn't even work better. Pick a number, say 3-5 quality applications a day, hit it, and stop.

When you're done for the day, you're done. Refreshing your inbox at 11pm changes nothing except your stress level.

Track wins that aren't offers

The job search has almost no positive feedback, so you have to make your own. Count the things you control:

  • Applications sent

  • Follow-ups sent

  • People you reached out to

  • Interviews landed

You did those things whether or not anyone wrote back. That's real progress, even on a silent week.

Don't do it alone

Isolation makes the whole thing heavier. Find one or two people also job hunting and check in weekly. Trade what's working, vent about what isn't.

Knowing other smart people are in the same boat reminds you it's the market, not you.

Take a real day off

You're allowed to not job search sometimes. A burnt-out brain interviews badly and writes worse applications. Resting isn't quitting, it's maintenance.

The reframe

This is temporary. Every person with a job you admire went through some version of this slog. The ones who make it aren't the most talented, they're the ones who didn't let the grind take them out before their yes showed up.

Yours is coming. Stay in the game long enough to catch it.

Do this today: Set your daily application cap right now. Hit it, then go do something that has nothing to do with job searching. You'll search better tomorrow.

-Ford from Runway

Quick note: if the job search is weighing on you more heavily than this, that's worth taking seriously, and talking to someone you trust or a counselor (most campuses have free ones) is a real strength, not a weakness.
