Everyone obsesses over landing the job and nobody thinks about what happens after. But the first 90 days set your entire reputation. Get them right and you're "the great hire." This is the part the job search never prepares you for.

Weeks 1-2: Shut up and absorb

Your instinct will be to prove yourself fast by having opinions. Resist it. The fastest way to look junior is to suggest changes before you understand why things are the way they are.

Instead: ask questions, take notes, learn names, figure out how the team actually works. Be the person who listens first.

Take notes on everything (so they only explain once)

The fastest way to annoy a new manager is making them repeat instructions. Write down how to do tasks the first time you're shown.

Nothing builds trust faster than a new hire who doesn't need to be told twice.

Find the small wins early

You won't be handed huge projects in month one. So nail the small stuff visibly. Reply quickly, hit every deadline, do the unglamorous task well.

Reliability is a reputation. Build it before you reach for anything bigger.

Ask this one question in your first 1:1

"What does success look like for me in the first 90 days?"

Now you know exactly what your manager is measuring, instead of guessing. Then go quietly deliver on it.

When you're stuck, try before you ask

Don't ask a question the second you hit a wall, and don't sit stuck for hours either. Find the middle: try to figure it out, and if you're still stuck after a real attempt, ask, with what you've already tried.

"I tried X and Y, I'm stuck on Z" shows you're resourceful, not helpless.

Build relationships, not just output

Get coffee (or a 15-min virtual chat) with people outside your immediate team. The people who get promoted aren't always the best workers, they're the ones people know and like.

You're not just doing a job. You're building a network inside the building.

The big idea

The first 90 days are about trust, not heroics. Be reliable, be coachable, be easy to work with. Do that and the bigger opportunities come to you, because you've proven you can be counted on.

Do this today: This one's for future-you. Save this email. When you land the offer (and you will), reread it before day one.

You got this!
