Summer is closer than you think.

Most students will get to August and realize they wasted the entire break.

No internship. No side projects. No progress on their goals.

Then they panic in October when job applications open and they have nothing new to put on their resume.

Don't be that person.

Here's how to set summer goals that actually happen:

Start planning now, not in August.

By the time summer ends, some of the best internships are already filled for the next year.

Plan now. Apply now. Secure opportunities now.

Make your goals specific and measurable.

Bad goal: "Get better at coding"
Good goal: "Complete 3 coding projects I can add to my portfolio by August 1st"

Bad goal: "Network more"
Good goal: "Have 10 coffee chats with people working in marketing by July 15th"

If you can't measure it, you can't track it. If you can't track it, it won't happen.

Pick 3 goals maximum.

Not 10. Not 15. Three.

One professional goal. One skill-building goal. One personal goal.

Examples:

  • Professional: "Secure a fall internship by July 15th"

  • Skill: "Learn SQL and complete 2 data analysis projects"

  • Personal: "Read 5 books on leadership and career development"

Break them into monthly milestones.

Summer goal: Get an internship.

June milestone: Apply to 25 positions, have resume reviewed, connect with 10 recruiters.
July milestone: Complete 5 interviews, follow up on applications, apply to 15 more.
August milestone: Accept offer or continue applying until secured.

This makes big goals feel manageable.

Schedule time for your goals.

Goals without calendar time don't happen.

Block 1 hour every weekday morning for applications. Block Saturday mornings for skill-building. Block Sunday evenings for planning the week ahead.

Build accountability.

Tell someone your goals. A friend, a roommate, a parent.

Check in with them weekly. "Here's what I said I'd do. Here's what I actually did."

You're way more likely to follow through when someone else knows.

What summer goals should you actually set?

If you don't have an internship yet: Make that goal #1. Everything else is secondary.

If you have an internship secured: Focus on skill-building projects you can showcase.

If you're taking summer classes: Set learning goals beyond just passing. Build something, create something, connect with professors.

The summer goals that actually matter for your career:

Get real work experience (internship, freelance, project). Build something tangible you can show in interviews. Expand your network in your target industry. Learn a high-value skill employers actually want.

What NOT to prioritize:

"Enjoying summer" is not a goal (you can do both). "Figuring out what I want to do" without taking action. "Researching companies" without actually applying.

The truth:

Summer is 3 months. That's 12 weeks.

If you don't plan it, it disappears.

The students who set goals in May get internships. The students who wait until school starts back up again scramble for whatever's left.

Do this today:

Write down 3 goals for summer. Make them specific. Break them into monthly milestones. Block time on your calendar this week to make progress on goal #1.

Start now. Your future self will thank you.
