You're applying to dozens of jobs. Hearing nothing back.
It's not your qualifications. It's probably one of these 5 things.
Here's why you're not getting interviews:
1. You're applying to jobs you're not qualified for
If the job requires 3-5 years of experience and you have 0, you're wasting your time.
If it says "proficient in Python" and you took one intro class, skip it.
Apply to jobs where you meet 70%+ of the requirements. Anything less, move on.
2. Your resume isn't tailored
Sending the same generic resume to every job kills your chances.
The ATS (applicant tracking system) scans for keywords from the job description.
If those keywords aren't in your resume, you get auto-rejected before a human even sees it.
How to fix it:
Read the job description. Find the 5-10 most important skills/requirements they mention.
Make sure those exact words appear in your resume (if you actually have that experience).
Don't lie. Just emphasize the relevant parts.
3. You're applying too late
Jobs posted 2+ weeks ago already have 200+ applications.
Jobs posted in the last 24-48 hours have 10-20.
Your odds are WAY better when you apply early.
Check job boards daily. Apply within 48 hours of posting. Set up alerts so you see new postings immediately.
4. Your resume has obvious red flags
Typos. Grammatical errors. Formatting issues. Unprofessional email address ([email protected]).
Run your resume through Grammarly. Have someone else proofread it. Make sure it's clean, professional, and error-free.
5. You're not following up
Most people apply and wait. That's it.
The ones who get interviews? They follow up.
48-72 hours after applying, find the recruiter on LinkedIn. Send a short message expressing continued interest.
This shows initiative and gets your name in front of them again.
The follow-up message that works:
"Hi [Name], I applied for the [Role] position on [Date] and wanted to follow up. I'm a [year] at [School] with experience in [relevant skill]. I'm particularly interested in this opportunity because [specific reason]. Are there any updates on next steps?"
What else could be wrong:
Your LinkedIn doesn't match your resume (red flag for recruiters).
You don't have a LinkedIn at all (they'll skip you).
Your resume is 3 pages long (keep it to 1 page for entry-level).
You're only applying online (referrals get interviews 10x more often).
The harsh truth:
Sometimes you do everything right and still don't hear back.
That's just volume. They got 500 applications for 1 spot.
But if you're consistently getting 0 interviews after 50+ applications, something on this list is the problem.
Do this today:
Fix your resume. Tailor it to the job you want.
Apply to 5 jobs posted in the last 48 hours.
Follow up on any applications you sent this week.
One of these will break the pattern.
