The same role LinkedIn shows you 3-5 days from now is already sitting in a pile of 500 applications. Runway pulls jobs straight from company career sites the moment they post, so you see them first, when there are 15 applicants, not 500. 

Who sees the role and applies first is the whole game.

A lot of the job-search struggle isn't about applications, it's not knowing what to apply for. If you're staring at job boards with no idea what you actually want to do, you're not behind or broken. Most people figure this out by exploring, not by having a lightning-bolt moment. Here's how to get unstuck.

Stop waiting to "find your passion"

The advice to "follow your passion" paralyzes people, because most 20-year-olds don't have one clear, obvious passion. That's normal.

Passion usually comes after you get good at something and see your impact, not before. So stop waiting for certainty to strike. You find direction by trying things, not by thinking hard enough until the answer appears.

Start with what you're drawn to, not what you're "supposed" to do

Notice what actually holds your attention. Which classes don't feel like a chore? What do you end up reading about or doing in your free time? What kind of problems do you enjoy solving?

These aren't trivial. The threads of what naturally interests you are real clues, often more useful than any career quiz.

Use process of elimination

You don't need to know exactly what you want, you just need to take the next step. And figuring out what you don't want is just as valuable.

Hated your retail job but liked the problem-solving parts? That's information. Loved a class but dreaded the group presentations? Also information. Each experience narrows the field, even the bad ones.

Talk to people who do the jobs

The fastest way to learn what a career is actually like is to ask someone who does it. Informational chats are low-pressure and incredibly clarifying.

Message someone in a field you're curious about: "I'm exploring career paths and would love to hear what your day-to-day is actually like." You'll learn more in one 15-minute conversation than in hours of scrolling job descriptions.

Try things cheaply and quickly

You don't have to commit to a career to test it. Take a class, do a small project, volunteer, get a short internship, shadow someone for a day.

Low-cost experiments let you sample a path without betting everything on it. A weekend project in a field can tell you fast whether you'd actually enjoy it.

Don't over-think the first job

Here's the pressure-reliever: your first job doesn't lock you in. Almost nobody stays in their first role or even their first field forever.

The first job is a starting point that teaches you more about what you want. You'll refine your direction by working, far faster than by agonizing over the "perfect" choice from the outside.

Look for skills, not just titles

Instead of fixating on a specific job title, think about what you want to build. Do you want to work with data? With people? With words? Solving technical problems? Creating things?

Skills and strengths transfer across many roles. Getting clear on how you like to work points you toward whole categories of jobs, which is more useful than chasing one title.

Do this today: Write down three things, a class or activity that genuinely interested you, a task you'd happily do again, and one field you're curious about. Then message one person who works in that field and ask what their day is really like. Direction comes from motion, so take one small step.
