Hey there!

Welcome to your daily dose of curated early-career opportunities! Your job search shouldn’t feel confusing, late, or based on luck.

Here's what nobody tells you about the job search: it's not about applying to more jobs. It's about being first.

The same role LinkedIn shows you 3-5 days from now is already sitting in a pile of 500 applications. Runway pulls jobs straight from company career sites the moment they post, so you see them first, when there are 15 applicants, not 500.

Who sees the role and applies first is the whole game.

When most people get an offer, they focus entirely on the salary number, and often accept everything else as-is. But compensation is way more than base pay, and a lot of the other stuff is negotiable. Especially early in your career, knowing what else you can ask for can meaningfully improve an offer, even when the salary won't budge.

Understand the full picture of an offer

Your total compensation includes base salary, but also signing bonus, performance bonuses, equity, benefits, PTO, and more. Focusing only on base means you might be leaving real value on the table.

Two offers with the same salary can be worth very different amounts once you factor in everything else. Learn to evaluate and negotiate the whole package, not just one line.

When salary won't move, pivot to other things

Sometimes a company has fixed salary bands, especially for entry-level roles, and truly can't budge on base. That's not the end of the negotiation, it's a redirect.

Try: "I understand there's not flexibility on base. Are there other parts of the package we could look at?" Then go after the things that often do have room.

Signing bonus

A one-time signing bonus is frequently easier for a company to grant than a permanent salary bump, because it doesn't affect their ongoing pay structure.

If base is locked, this is often your best target: "Would a signing bonus be possible to help bridge the gap?" It puts real money in your pocket without them touching the salary band.

Start date and flexibility

You can often negotiate when you start, and how you work. Need a few extra weeks before starting? Want to lock in remote or hybrid days? These are real, valuable terms.

Flexibility on where and when you work has genuine value, sometimes more than a small salary difference, and companies are frequently willing to accommodate.

PTO and time off

Vacation days are sometimes negotiable, especially if salary isn't. An extra week of PTO is real compensation.

"Would there be flexibility to add a few extra vacation days?" is a reasonable ask, and time off is worth more than people realize.

An early review

If they can't raise the starting number, negotiate a shot at raising it sooner. Ask for a formal performance and salary review at 6 months instead of the standard 12.

"Could we schedule a compensation review at six months based on my performance?" gives you a near-term path to the money, and puts your raise on the calendar.

Professional development

Companies often have budget for growth even when salary is tight. Ask about funding for courses, certifications, conferences, or a learning stipend.

These build your skills and resume on the company's dime, real long-term value, and they're an easy yes for many employers.

Always stay gracious

However you negotiate, keep it warm and appreciative. Frame asks as "is there flexibility on X?" rather than demands, and express genuine enthusiasm for the role throughout.

The goal is a better deal and a great start to the relationship. Negotiating professionally signals maturity, it doesn't put the offer at risk when done with grace.

Do this today: If you have an offer, list out everything beyond base salary you could ask for, signing bonus, start date, PTO, early review, development budget, and pick the two that matter most to you. If you're not there yet, just knowing these are negotiable puts you ahead of most candidates.
