New semester, clean slate.

Before classes bury you, spend 30 minutes getting your career basics in order.

Do these six things now and you'll be ready when opportunities show up, instead of scrambling when they do.

1. Update your resume (10 min)

Add anything new from over the summer, a job, a project, a class, a skill. Cut it to one page. Make sure your top bullets lead with results and numbers, not duties.

This is the single most reused document in your search. Get it current now so you're never editing it in a panic the night before a deadline.

2. Fix your LinkedIn headline (2 min)

Change it from "Student at [school]" to what you're actually looking for: "[Major] student | Seeking [role type] | [one skill]."

Recruiters search by keywords, and "student" isn't one anyone types. This tiny change makes you findable.

3. Build your target list (10 min)

Pick 15-20 companies you'd actually be excited to work for. Mix big names with smaller companies where competition is lighter.

Fall recruiting moves fast. Having your list ready means you're watching the right places when roles open, instead of starting from zero.

4. Set up job alerts (2 min)

You have class all day, you can't refresh job boards constantly. Set alerts so new roles come to you.

The whole edge in recruiting is speed, applying while the pile's still small. Alerts are how you catch roles early without living on a job board.

5. Write your 3 best stories (5 min)

Jot down your three strongest accomplishments, each with what you did and the result. These become your resume bullets, your interview answers, and your networking lines.

Do this once and you've got a toolkit you'll pull from all semester.

Bonus: put career fair dates on your calendar

Your school's fall career fairs are some of the easiest face time with recruiters you'll get all year. Find the dates now and block them so they don't sneak up on you.

The big idea

The students who land great opportunities aren't cramming applications the week of a deadline. They set up the basics early, so when a role opens or a recruiter reaches out, they're ready to move immediately. Thirty minutes now saves you a semester of scrambling.

You got this!
