"I don't have enough experience."

"I'm not qualified."

"They'll never hire me."

Stop.

You're rejecting yourself before they even get a chance to.

Here's the truth:

Job descriptions are wish lists, not requirements.

If you meet 60-70% of what they're asking for, you should apply.

What companies actually want:

Someone who can learn quickly. Someone who shows up and does the work. Someone who's easy to work with. Someone who's genuinely interested in the role.

The "5 years of experience" and "expert in 10 different tools" stuff? That's negotiable.

How to reframe your mindset:

Instead of: "I don't have experience in X" Say: "I haven't done X professionally, but I've done Y which uses similar skills"

Instead of: "I'm not qualified" Say: "I meet most of the requirements and I'm a fast learner for the rest"

Instead of: "They want someone with more experience" Say: "They want someone who can deliver results, and I can prove I've done that"

The skills you DO have (even if you don't realize it):

Managed group projects? → You have project management experience. Ran a club or organization? → You have leadership experience. Created content for social media? → You have marketing experience. Helped solve technical problems for friends? → You have problem-solving skills. Worked retail or customer service? → You have communication and conflict resolution skills.

What to say in your cover letter when you "lack experience":

"While I haven't worked in [specific role] before, my experience with [related skill] has prepared me to contribute immediately. In my role as [previous experience], I [specific achievement with numbers], which demonstrates my ability to [skill they need]."

What to say in interviews:

When they ask about experience you don't have:

"I haven't done that specific task, but I've done something similar. When I [example], I had to learn [related skill] quickly and [result I achieved]. I'd approach this the same way."

The question that changes everything:

Instead of asking yourself "Am I qualified?"

Ask: "Could I learn this job in 3 months?"

If yes, apply.

What happens when you apply anyway:

Worst case: They say no. You're in the exact same position you were before.

Best case: They see your potential, give you a shot, and you prove them right.

Middle case: They keep your resume on file for future roles.

None of these outcomes are bad.

The pattern I see:

Students who think they're "not qualified" don't apply. Students who apply anyway get interviews. Students who get interviews sometimes get offers. Students who never applied get nothing.

Companies know you're early career.

They're not expecting you to know everything.

They're evaluating:

  • Can you learn?

  • Will you work hard?

  • Are you coachable?

  • Do you actually want this?

You can prove all of that without having 5 years of experience.

You got this!
