You just applied to a job.

Now you're sending a follow-up email to the recruiter.

Subject line: "Application for Marketing Intern Position"

They delete it without opening.

Here's why: Recruiters get 50+ emails per day with that exact subject line.

Subject lines that actually get opened:

For following up after applying:

"Following up: [Your Name] - [Role Title]"

Example: "Following up: Sarah Johnson - Marketing Intern"

For initial outreach:

"[Your School] student - Question about [Specific Role]"

Example: "Georgia Tech student - Question about Data Analyst role"

For after an interview:

"Thank you - [Your Name] - [Role] interview"

Example: "Thank you - Alex Kim - Software Engineer interview"

Why these work:

Your name is in the subject (makes it personal)
Specific role mentioned (shows focus)
Clear purpose (they know what to expect)

Subject lines to avoid:

"Interested in opportunities" (vague)
"Resume attached" (spam vibes)
"Quick question" (what question?)
"Application" (too generic)

Example follow-up email:

Subject: Following up: Jordan Lee - Finance Analyst Intern

Body:

Hi [Name],

I applied for the Finance Analyst Intern position last week and wanted to follow up. I'm a junior at Penn State with experience in financial modeling, and I'm very interested in this opportunity.

Are there any updates on the timeline or next steps?

Thank you,
Jordan Lee

The test:

If your subject line could apply to 100 different people, it's too generic.

Make it specific to YOU and THIS role.
