Landing the job is step one. Once you're in, a huge part of your success, and your happiness, comes down to your relationships with the people around you. Early-career people often focus so hard on the work that they neglect this, but the coworker relationships you build shape your reputation, your opportunities, and how much you actually enjoy going to work. Here's how to do it well.

Understand why this matters

Your relationships at work aren't just nice-to-haves. The people you work with influence how your contributions are seen, whether you get pulled into good projects, and who advocates for you when opportunities come up.

Being good at your job gets you in the door. Being someone people genuinely like working with is what keeps you moving forward. Both matter, and the second one is often underrated.

Start by listening and observing

When you're new, resist the urge to immediately assert yourself. Spend your early weeks learning the team, how people communicate, what the dynamics are, who does what.

Being a good listener who's genuinely interested in understanding the team makes a far better first impression than someone who comes in loud with opinions. Absorb first, contribute second.

Being low-maintenance and dependable makes people want to work with you. Reliability is quietly one of the most valued traits in any workplace, and it's entirely within your control.

Handle conflict with maturity

Disagreements will happen. How you handle them shapes your relationships and reputation. Stay calm, professional, and solution-focused, don't get petty or defensive.

Being someone who can navigate friction gracefully earns real respect, and it protects the relationships you're building. One handled-well conflict can strengthen a relationship rather than damage it.

Don't force it, be authentic

You don't have to be the most social person or fake a personality that isn't you. Genuine, consistent, respectful interactions matter more than being the office extrovert.

Be yourself, be kind, be reliable, and let relationships develop naturally over time. Authentic connections are the ones that last.
