Not every job posting deserves an application. Some are dead ends, ghost listings, or so competitive you're wasting effort. Learning to read a posting fast, and knowing when to skip, means you spend your limited energy where it actually counts.

Check the post date first

This is the highest-value 5 seconds you'll spend. A job posted 3 weeks ago already has 300+ applicants and may already have someone lined up. A job posted in the last 48 hours has a fraction of that.

If a posting's been up for over a month with no "reposted" date, be skeptical, it may be stale or a ghost listing (more on that below).

The 70% rule for requirements

Don't let a long requirements list scare you off, but don't ignore it either. The test: do you meet about 70% of what they're asking?

If yes, apply, the list describes their dream candidate, not the minimum. If you meet 30%, move on; you'll just burn time getting auto-rejected. This keeps you from both self-rejecting and spam-applying.

Watch for ghost jobs

Some postings aren't real openings. Companies sometimes post to build a resume pipeline, look like they're growing, or keep options open with no intent to hire soon.

Warning signs: it's been reposted repeatedly for months, the description is extremely vague, or the same company has 40 near-identical listings. Not always a dealbreaker, but adjust your expectations and don't pour your best effort there.

Read between the lines on red flags

The language tells you about the job before you apply:

None are automatic no's, but they tell you what you're walking into.

Decode what they actually want

Flip it around, the posting also tells you how to win it. The first 2-3 responsibilities listed are what the job really is. The repeated skills are your resume keywords. The "nice to haves" are where you can stand out if you have them.

Read a posting as a cheat sheet for your application, not just a yes/no gate.

When to apply anyway despite red flags

Early in your career, sometimes you take the imperfect job for the experience, and that's completely valid. A ghost-job-ish posting or a "wears many hats" startup role can still be a great first step. The point isn't to reject everything with a flaw, it's to go in with clear eyes and spend your best effort on the strongest opportunities.

Do this today: Before you apply to anything, run the quick check, posted recently? Meet 70%? Any red flags? Then put your real effort into the ones that pass.
