Whether you're looking to leave a first job that isn't working out, or job searching while finishing a contract or part-time gig, doing it while you're already working is its own challenge. Limited time, tricky logistics, and the need for discretion. Here's how to run a search without it taking over your life or tipping off your current employer.

Protect your search from your current job

First rule: keep it separate. Use your personal email and phone, never your work accounts, for anything job-search related. Apply on your own time and your own devices.

On LinkedIn, use the "Open to Work" setting that shows only to recruiters, not the public green banner, so your current employer doesn't see it. Basic discretion protects you while you look.

Use small, consistent time blocks

You don't have hours a day, so don't pretend you do. Thirty focused minutes, a few times a week, is enough if it's consistent.

Batch your tasks: one block to find and save roles, one to tailor and apply, one to follow up. Small and steady beats occasional marathon sessions you can't sustain.

Handle interviews without lying

The tricky part: interviewing while employed. You don't have to lie, but you can be strategic. Ask for early morning, lunch, or end-of-day slots. Use personal time off if you need to. Many interviewers understand and will accommodate a working candidate, it's a normal situation.

If asked why you're looking, stay positive. Never trash your current employer, it reads as a red flag. Frame it around what you're moving toward, not what you're running from.

Let your experience be your advantage

Here's the upside of searching while working: you have real experience to point to, even if it's just a few months. You're not starting from zero anymore.

Talk about what you've actually done in the role, the skills you've built, the results you've contributed to. That's more concrete than anything you had as a pure student, use it.

Never burn the bridge

However your current job is going, leave well when the time comes. Give proper notice, wrap up your work, stay professional.

The world is smaller than you think. Your current manager could be a reference, a future colleague, or connected to your next employer. A clean exit protects your reputation for years.

Keep your options open until it's real

Don't quit anything until you have a signed offer in hand. Verbal offers fall through. Keep working, keep performing, and only make your move once the new role is genuinely locked.

The strongest position to negotiate and decide from is having a steady paycheck while you choose your next step.

Do this today: If you're searching while working, set up a personal email folder for your search and turn on the recruiter-only "Open to Work" setting. Then block 30 minutes this week to apply to one fresh role.

You got this!
