Your biggest career enemy:
Your ego.
Most professionals spend energy protecting their position instead of learning from those around them.
They see a brilliant colleague as competition rather than an opportunity.
This mindset keeps you stuck while others accelerate past you.
Here's how to leverage working with exceptional people:
Ask questions even when you think you should already know the answers. Admitting you don't know something is strength, not weakness.
Study their decision-making process and problem-solving approach, not just their results. Watch how they think through problems. That's the real lesson.
Volunteer for projects where you'll be the least experienced person on the team. This is where the fastest growth happens.
Share credit generously and highlight others' contributions in meetings. Making others look good builds relationships. Hoarding credit builds resentment.
Request feedback specifically on areas where they excel and you're developing. Don't ask vague questions. Ask specific ones about their strengths.
Focus on what you can contribute rather than what you lack compared to them. You bring something different to the table. Own it.
The fastest way to level up is to surround yourself with people who challenge your thinking and raise your standards.
When you're intimidated by someone's expertise, that's a signal you're in the right environment for growth.
The goal isn't to compete with them - it's to learn from them until their level of thinking becomes your baseline.
Do this today:
Think about the smartest person on your team.
What's one thing they do exceptionally well that you could learn from?
Ask them about it.
