Everyone tells you to get an internship. Then every internship asks for experience you don't have yet. If you're early in college, that gap feels impossible. Here's how to close it before you need to.

Your class projects are experience, use them

You've built things. You just filed them under "homework" instead of "work."

That semester-long research project, the case competition, the group build in your CS class, those are real deliverables. Write them like jobs, with what you did and what came of it.

"Class project" sounds like nothing. "Built a marketing plan for a local business, presented to the owner" sounds like something. Same work.

Join one club and actually do something in it

Not five clubs where you show up. One where you do a job.

Run the events. Handle the budget. Grow the social account. Recruit new members. Any of those becomes a resume line with a real result attached, and clubs will hand a freshman real responsibility because nobody else wants it.

Take the unglamorous job

Campus job, retail, food service, tutoring, whatever. People think these don't count. They absolutely do.

You just have to frame them right: managing a busy shift is time management under pressure. Handling customers is communication and problem-solving. Training new hires is leadership. Employers care that you were reliable and can handle responsibility.

Build one thing on your own

This is the freshman cheat code, because nobody expects it from you.

Make a small project in the field you're curious about. Run a real Instagram for a friend's business. Build one app. Analyze a public dataset and write up what you found. Do a stock pitch.

It takes a weekend. It gives you something to talk about that 95% of your peers don't have.

Get the smaller internship first

Everyone's fighting for the big-name summer internship. Meanwhile, a local business, a startup, a professor's research project, or a nonprofit will take a sophomore and give you real work.

That first "small" experience is what makes you competitive for the big one next year. You're not skipping the ladder, you're getting on the first rung.

Time is your actual advantage

Here's the reframe: as a freshman or sophomore, you're not behind. You're early. You have 2-3 years to build a resume, while juniors are scrambling to build one in a semester.

Every small thing you do now compounds. The junior with a great resume isn't more talented, they just started earlier.

The big idea

You don't need an internship to have a resume. Class projects, one club where you actually do something, a normal job framed well, and one thing you built yourself, that's a real resume, and you can have all of it before junior year.

Do this today: Pick one thing from the list above and take the first step. Join the club, pitch the professor, start the project. The students who look impressive later are the ones who started when it felt too early.
