Most people think of recruiters as gatekeepers, the people standing between them and the job. Flip that. A recruiter who likes you is one of the most valuable allies you can have in a job search. Here's how to actually build that relationship.

Understand what recruiters actually want

Recruiters get paid to fill roles with good people. When you're a strong, easy-to-work-with candidate, you're not bothering them, you're solving their problem.

Once you get that, the whole dynamic changes. You're not begging for a favor. You're helping them do their job. That mindset makes you way more confident in every interaction.

Two types of recruiters, know the difference

Internal recruiters work for one company, hiring for that company's roles.

Agency/external recruiters work with many companies and place candidates across all of them. These are especially worth knowing, because one good relationship can lead to multiple opportunities over time.

Make a strong, low-maintenance first impression

When a recruiter reaches out or you connect with one, be responsive, be clear about what you want, and be easy to deal with.

Reply quickly. Know your target roles. Don't be vague or flaky. Recruiters juggle tons of candidates and gravitate toward the ones who make their life easy.

Be honest about what you want

Don't make a recruiter guess. Tell them clearly: the roles you're after, your timeline, your must-haves, your salary range.

The clearer you are, the better they can match you. Vague candidates are hard to place, so they get deprioritized. Specific ones are easy, so they rise to the top.

Stay on their radar (without being annoying)

If a recruiter can't help right now, don't disappear. A short check-in every few weeks keeps you top of mind for when something opens up.

"Hi [Name], still on the search for [role type]. Anything new come across your desk? Appreciate you keeping me in mind." Simple, low-pressure, effective.

Give them something back

Relationships go both ways. If you know someone who'd be a fit for a role they're filling, send the referral. If a recruiter helped you, leave them a note or a recommendation.

Recruiters remember the candidates who were generous, not just the ones who took.

Connect even when you're not job hunting

The best time to build these relationships is before you desperately need them. Connect with recruiters in your field on LinkedIn now, engage a little, be a familiar name. Then when you're searching, you've already got allies instead of strangers.

The big idea

Recruiters aren't obstacles, they're partners who get paid to help good people get hired. Be responsive, be clear, be easy to work with, and give back when you can. A recruiter in your corner can change your entire search.

Do this today: Find one recruiter in your target field on LinkedIn and send a connection request with a short, friendly note about what you're looking for. One ally is worth a hundred cold applications.
