You can read interview tips all day, but reading isn't practicing. The first time you say your answers out loud should not be in the real interview. Here's how to run a mock interview that actually makes you better.

Why out loud changes everything

There's a huge gap between knowing your answer in your head and saying it smoothly out loud. The words come out clunky, you ramble, you lose your point. Practicing out loud closes that gap before it costs you.

You'll feel awkward the first time. That's the whole reason to do it in practice instead of for real.

Grab anyone, they don't need to be an expert

A friend, roommate, family member, anyone willing to sit across from you for 20 minutes. They don't need to know your field. They just need to ask questions and listen.

No one available? Use AI. "Act as a hiring manager for [role] and ask me 5 interview questions one at a time." Or record yourself on your phone and watch it back. Awkward, but it works.

The 5 questions to drill

Most interviews are variations of these. Practice them and you're ready for 80% of what's coming:

  1. "Tell me about yourself."

  2. "Why do you want this role?"

  3. "Tell me about a challenge you faced and how you handled it."

  4. "What's a weakness you're working on?"

  5. "Do you have any questions for us?"

Have your partner push back

A good mock interview isn't just reciting. Have them ask one follow-up: "Can you give me an example?" or "Why that approach?"

Real interviewers dig. Practicing the follow-up is what separates a smooth candidate from a scripted one.

Get honest feedback on the stuff you can't see

Ask your partner: Did I ramble? Did I sound confident? Did I actually answer the question? Any "ums" or filler words?

You can't hear your own bad habits. Someone else can, and 10 minutes of honest feedback beats hours of solo prep.

Record one round and watch it

Painful but powerful. Watching yourself back shows you everything, your pace, your filler words, whether you look nervous. You'll fix more in one viewing than in a week of reading tips.

The big idea

Interviewing is a skill, and skills get better with reps, not theory. One real mock interview before the day teaches you more than a dozen articles. Practice out loud, get feedback, run it again.

Do this today: Text one person and ask them to run a 15-minute mock interview with you this week. Lock in a time. Future-you, walking into the real thing calm, will thank you.

You got this!
