Not every job opportunity is a good opportunity.

Some job postings have red flags so obvious you should never apply.

But most people miss them because they're desperate for any offer.

Here are the red flags that mean you should keep scrolling:

🚩 "Fast-paced environment" or "high-pressure culture" = You'll be overworked and burnt out within months. They're telling you upfront that work-life balance doesn't exist here.

🚩 "We're like a family" = Unhealthy boundaries. They'll expect you to sacrifice everything for the company and make you feel guilty for having a life outside work.

🚩 "Must be comfortable wearing many hats" = You'll do 5 people's jobs for 1 person's salary. No clear role definition means they'll pile on whatever they don't want to do.

🚩 "Competitive salary" with no range listed = They're going to lowball you. If the pay was good, they'd post it.

🚩 "Entry-level position requiring 3-5 years experience" = They don't know what they want. They want senior-level work for entry-level pay.

🚩 "Commission-based" or "unlimited earning potential" = No guaranteed income. You'll make nothing while they profit from your work.

🚩 Multiple typos or unprofessional posting = If they can't write a decent job posting, imagine how disorganized the company is.

🚩 Vague job responsibilities = "Various tasks as assigned." They have no idea what this role actually does. You'll be a catch-all for whatever they need.

🚩 "Must be available 24/7" or "flexible hours required" = They'll call you at 10pm and expect you to work weekends without extra pay.

🚩 No company name listed = Either it's a sketchy recruiter or the company has such a bad reputation they can't post publicly.

What good job postings include:

Clear responsibilities. Realistic qualifications. Actual salary range. Reasonable working hours. Named company. Professional writing.

What to do when you see red flags:

If it's 1-2 minor flags and you need the experience, proceed with caution. Ask questions in the interview about the flags you noticed.

If it's 3+ flags, skip it entirely. Your time is better spent applying to legitimate opportunities.

Questions to ask in interviews to spot red flags:

"What does work-life balance look like here?" (Watch how they respond. Hesitation = bad sign.)

"Why did the last person in this role leave?" (If they avoid answering or say "It wasn't a good fit," that's a red flag.)

"What's your management style?" (If they can't articulate it clearly, you'll have a bad manager.)

"How is success measured in this role?" (If they give vague answers, they don't know what they actually want from you.)

The truth:

A bad first job is worse than no job.

It tanks your mental health, teaches you bad habits, and looks questionable on your resume when you leave after 3 months.

Be selective. You deserve better than a toxic workplace.
