"So, tell me about yourself."
Most people panic at this question.
They either ramble for 5 minutes about their entire life story, or they give a 10-second answer that says nothing useful.
Here's exactly how to answer it:
Use the Present → Past → Future framework.
It's a 60-second answer with three parts.
Present (15 seconds): Who you are professionally right now.
"I'm a junior at [University] studying [Major]. I'm particularly interested in [specific area within your field]."
Past (30 seconds): Your relevant experience and what you've accomplished.
"Last summer, I interned at [Company] where I [specific thing you did with results]. Before that, I [another relevant experience]. Through these experiences, I've developed strong skills in [2-3 relevant skills]."
Future (15 seconds): Why THIS role at THIS company.
"I'm looking for a summer 2026 internship where I can apply these skills and continue growing in [area]. I'm particularly excited about this role at [Company] because [specific reason related to the company or role]."
Full example:
"I'm a junior at UCLA studying Marketing with a focus on digital strategy. Last summer, I interned at a local startup where I managed their social media, growing their Instagram following from 1,000 to 5,000 followers in three months. Before that, I led the marketing committee for my business fraternity, where we increased event attendance by 40%. Through these experiences, I've developed strong skills in content creation, analytics, and campaign strategy. I'm looking for a summer 2026 internship where I can apply these skills at a larger scale. I'm particularly excited about this role at Adobe because of your focus on creative marketing and the mentorship program you offer interns."
Why this works:
It's structured (they can follow it easily). It's concise (under 90 seconds). It includes specifics (numbers, companies, skills). It connects to the role (shows why you're there).
What NOT to do:
Don't start with "I was born in..." Don't list every job you've ever had. Don't talk about hobbies unless they're directly relevant. Don't be vague ("I'm a hard worker who's passionate about marketing"). Don't go over 90 seconds.
Practice this out loud before your interview.
Seriously. Say it out loud 5 times.
Time yourself.
It should feel natural, not memorized.
The most common mistakes:
Too long. They asked for a snapshot, not your biography.
Too short. "I'm a student looking for an internship" tells them nothing useful.
Too generic. Anyone could say what you're saying. Make it specific to YOU.
No connection to the role. They want to know why you're sitting in front of them, not just who you are.
How to personalize it for different interviews:
Keep the Present and Past the same.
Change the Future part for each company.
Research the company. Find one specific thing that excites you about THIS role.
Don't say "I've always wanted to work here" if you literally just found them on LinkedIn.
The truth:
This is usually the first real question in the interview.
Nail this, and you set a confident tone for everything that follows.
Mess this up, and you're playing catch-up the rest of the interview.
You got this!
