Hey there!

Welcome to your daily dose of curated early-career opportunities! Your job search shouldn’t feel confusing, late, or based on luck.

Here's what nobody tells you about the job search: it's not about applying to more jobs. It's about being first.

The same role LinkedIn shows you 3-5 days from now is already sitting in a pile of 500 applications. Runway pulls jobs straight from company career sites the moment they post, so you see them first, when there are 15 applicants, not 500.

Who sees the role and applies first is the whole game.

You got the job, congratulations. Now the first week begins, and it matters more than people realize. Those early days set the tone for how your manager and coworkers see you, and first impressions at work are sticky. Start strong and you build momentum and trust; start shaky and you spend months digging out. Here's how to make your first week count.

Show up early and eager

In your first week especially, arrive on time or a little early and bring genuine energy. This is when everyone forms their initial read on you, so show that you're excited and take it seriously.

You don't need to be over-the-top, just visibly engaged and glad to be there. Enthusiasm in the early days signals that hiring you was a good call, and people remember that first read.

Listen and learn before you leap

Resist the urge to prove yourself by immediately suggesting changes or asserting opinions. You don't understand the full context yet, and nothing reads as junior faster than proposing fixes on day two.

Spend your first week absorbing, how things work, why they're done that way, who does what. Ask questions, take it in. Be the person who listens first and contributes once they actually understand. That patience earns respect.

Take notes on everything

You'll be flooded with names, processes, tools, and information. Write it down. Nothing frustrates a busy manager like explaining the same thing twice.

Taking notes, and then not needing to be told again, is one of the fastest ways to build trust as a new hire. It signals you're organized, respectful of people's time, and someone they can rely on. Keep a notebook or doc going from day one.

Learn names and build early connections

Make an effort to learn people's names and start friendly relationships right away. Introduce yourself, be warm, show interest in your coworkers.

These early connections make you feel like part of the team faster and build the relationships that'll matter throughout your time there. Being approachable and friendly in week one pays dividends for months.

Clarify expectations early

Don't guess at what success looks like, ask. Early on, have a conversation with your manager: "What does success look like for me in the first 30, 60, 90 days?"

Now you know exactly what you're being measured on instead of guessing, and you can focus your energy on what actually matters. It also signals maturity and initiative, which makes a great impression.

Be reliable with the small stuff

You won't get huge projects in week one, so nail the small things visibly. Respond promptly, complete tasks on time, follow through on what you say.

Building a reputation for reliability early, even on minor tasks, establishes you as someone who can be trusted with bigger things. Reliability is a reputation you start building on day one.

Ask smart questions, but try first

Find the balance between asking too many questions and struggling in silence. When you hit something you don't know, make a genuine attempt first, then ask if you're still stuck, and show what you already tried.

"I tried X and Y, but I'm stuck on Z" reads as resourceful, not helpless. It shows you're taking initiative while still knowing when to seek help. That balance makes a strong early impression.

Stay positive and adaptable

Every new job has a learning curve and some awkward, confusing moments. Keep a positive, flexible attitude through it. Don't get visibly frustrated or complain in your first week.

Being someone who rolls with the newness gracefully makes you pleasant to work with and shows you can handle a challenge. A good attitude in the early days goes a long way.

Do this today: This one's for when you start, save it and reread it before day one. And even now, internalize the biggest lesson: in your first week, listen more than you talk, write everything down, and ask what success looks like. Do that and you'll start off ahead of most new hires.
