Most interviews now start on a screen, phone screens, video rounds, sometimes the whole process. Virtual interviews come with their own quirks, and the people who handle those quirks well have a real edge over candidates who just wing it like it's an in-person chat. Here's how to get it right.

Test your tech before, not during

Nothing tanks a first impression like fumbling with a frozen screen or a mic that won't work. Ten minutes beforehand, check your camera, microphone, internet connection, and the actual platform they're using.

Know how to join the call, mute/unmute, and share your screen if needed. Have a backup ready, phone number or a way to reconnect, in case something drops. Being smooth with the tech signals you're prepared and professional.

Fix your setup

Your background and lighting say something before you speak. Aim for a clean, uncluttered background and good lighting, natural light facing you, or a lamp in front rather than behind.

Position the camera at eye level so you're looking straight ahead, not down at them. Small adjustments make you look far more polished and put-together on screen.

Look at the camera, not the screen

This is the one most people get wrong. It feels natural to look at the person's face on your screen, but that makes it seem like you're looking away.

To make "eye contact," look at the camera lens when you speak. It feels unnatural at first, but it's what makes you appear engaged and confident to the person on the other end.

Minimize distractions

Virtual interviews are easy to derail. Silence your phone, close other tabs and notifications, and make sure you're somewhere quiet where you won't be interrupted.

Let roommates or family know you need the room. A distraction-free environment lets you focus and shows respect for the interviewer's time.

Have quiet notes nearby

One underrated perk of virtual interviews: you can have notes on hand. Keep a few bullet points nearby, your key stories, questions to ask, facts about the company.

Don't read from a script, that's obvious and stiff, but glancing at a few reminders can steady your nerves and keep you sharp. Just keep it subtle.

Manage the energy through the screen

Energy doesn't travel as well through a screen, so what feels normal to you can come across as flat to them. Sit up, smile, and bring a bit more enthusiasm than feels natural.

Speak clearly, and pause slightly to account for any lag so you're not talking over each other. A little extra warmth goes a long way on video.

Dress the part, fully

Dress professionally, head to toe, not just the top half. It's tempting to wear pajama pants off-camera, but dressing fully helps you feel and act the part, and saves you if you ever have to stand up.

Treat it with the same seriousness as an in-person interview, because it is one.

Do this today: Do a 5-minute test run. Open your camera, check your lighting and background, and practice looking at the lens while you answer "tell me about yourself." Sorting the setup now means you can focus on the actual interview when it counts.
