Here's a frustrating truth about the job search: the people who get hired aren't always the most qualified. They're often the ones who can describe themselves well. Your resume, your cover letter, your LinkedIn, your interview answers, they're all the same skill wearing different clothes. Get good at talking about yourself, and everything else gets easier.

Why this trips people up

Most people are bad at this for an honest reason: it feels like bragging, or they genuinely can't see their own value. You're too close to your own experience to know what's impressive about it.

So you undersell. "I just did some social media for a club" instead of "I grew a club's following by 300%." Same fact, wildly different impact.

The fix: get specific and add results

Vague makes you forgettable. Specific makes you real.

Don't say "hard worker." Say "juggled 18 credit hours while working 20 hours a week." Don't say "good with data." Say "analyzed 6 months of sales data and found a trend that changed how we ran events."

The formula everywhere: what you did + how + the result. Works on resumes, in interviews, in networking messages, all of it.

Steal your own words across every format

Once you nail how to describe an experience, reuse it everywhere. The bullet on your resume becomes the story in your interview becomes the line in your LinkedIn.

Write your best 5-6 accomplishments once, tightly, with results. Now you have a toolkit you pull from for every application instead of starting from scratch each time.

Practice the "tell me about yourself" answer now

This question shows up in every interview and every networking chat. It's the ultimate "describe yourself" test.

90 seconds: who you are, what you've done, what you're after. Have it ready before you need it. This one answer, polished, carries a huge amount of your job search.

Get an outside read

Since you can't see your own value clearly, borrow someone else's eyes. Ask a friend: "What would you say I'm good at?" Their answer often surfaces strengths you'd never think to list.

You'll frequently find the thing you dismiss as "no big deal" is exactly what someone else finds impressive.

The big idea

Describing yourself well isn't bragging, it's translation. You're taking what you actually did and making its value legible to someone who doesn't know you. Get good at it once, and your resume, cover letters, LinkedIn, and interviews all get stronger at the same time.

Do this today: Write out your single best accomplishment using the formula, what you did, how, and the result. Make it specific and concrete. That one sentence is now ready for your resume, your next interview, and your LinkedIn.
