Your internship is wrapping up, and what you do in the final two weeks matters more than you'd think. This is when return offers get decided and relationships get locked in for the future. Don't coast to the finish, run through this checklist instead.

1. Have the return offer conversation directly

Don't wait and hope they bring it up. In your final weeks, ask your manager plainly:

"I've really loved working here and I'd love to come back full-time. Is a return offer something we can talk about?"

The intern who names it is the one they remember. Even if the answer is "not right now," you'll get honest feedback on where you stand instead of walking away wondering.

2. Ask for feedback while you're still there

Sit down with your manager and ask: "What did I do well, and where could I have grown?"

This does two things, it shows maturity, and it gives you real information to improve. Do it before your last day, while they still have you top of mind.

3. Get the LinkedIn recommendation now

People forget you fast once you leave. While your work is fresh, ask the manager and one or two coworkers you were close with for a LinkedIn recommendation.

Make it easy: "Would you be open to writing a short LinkedIn recommendation? Happy to remind you of the projects I worked on." A recommendation written now is worth ten you try to get six months later.

4. Collect proof of your work

Save what you're allowed to keep, a summary of your projects, any results or numbers, presentations you made (nothing confidential). This becomes resume material and interview stories.

Write down your accomplishments now while you remember the details. "Built X that did Y" is easy to write today and hard to reconstruct next year.

5. Connect with everyone before you go

Send LinkedIn requests to your manager, your team, and anyone you worked with, while you're still fresh in their minds. Add a quick personal note to each.

These people are your network now. One of them may be the referral that lands your next job in two years.

6. Send a genuine thank-you

A short, sincere thank-you to your manager and key people goes a long way. Mention something specific you learned or appreciated.

It's not just polite, it's the last impression you leave, and it's the one they'll remember when your name comes up later.

7. Leave your work clean for the next person

Document what you were working on, tie up loose ends, and hand things off cleanly. Being the intern who left things organized (not a mess for someone else to untangle) is a quiet but real part of your reputation.

8. Stay in touch after you leave

The relationship shouldn't end on your last day. Check in every few months, congratulate people on wins, stay lightly on their radar.

The interns who get pulled back for full-time roles are often the ones who stayed connected, not the ones who disappeared and reappeared when they needed something.
