You crushed the interview, walked out, and did nothing. Most people don't send a thank-you email. That's exactly why sending one moves you up the list.

It's not about being polite. It's a second shot to make your case while you're fresh in their mind, and it signals you actually want the job.

Send it within 24 hours

Same day is ideal, next morning at the latest. Wait longer and the moment's gone.

Keep it short, 4-5 lines

Nobody wants to read an essay. Hit these beats:

"Hi [Name], thanks for taking the time to talk today. I really enjoyed hearing about [specific thing they mentioned]. It made me even more excited about [the role / the team]. I'm confident I could help with [one thing the role needs] and I'd love the chance to contribute. Looking forward to next steps. Best, [Name]"

The line that makes it work

Reference something specific from the actual conversation, not a generic "great to meet you." Something they said, a project they mentioned, a challenge the team is facing.

That one detail proves you were locked in and listening. It's the difference between a template and a real human who paid attention.

Bonus: fix a flub

Stumbled on a question? The thank-you is your do-over.

"One thing I wanted to add, when you asked about [topic], I'd also point to [better answer]."

You don't get that second chance anywhere else.

Send one to everyone you met

Multiple interviewers? Send each a slightly different note. Same template, but reference something specific to each conversation so they don't compare identical emails.

Do this today: If you've interviewed in the last day and didn't send one, send it now. It's not too late, and it still counts.
