You found a great job yesterday.
80% match. Fresh posting. Perfect role.
But you didn't apply yet because:
"I need to update my resume first"
"I should add one more project to my portfolio"
"Let me rewrite my cover letter this weekend"
The job just got 150 applications. Yours isn't one of them.
Here's the truth: Done is better than perfect.
What happens while you wait:
Day 1 (when you found it): 15 applicants
Day 2 (while you "polish"): 50 applicants
Day 3 (when you finally apply): 120 applicants
Day 7: 300+ applicants, role already moving to interviews
Your "perfect" resume is competing with 300 people.
A "good enough" resume on day 1 would have competed with 15.
The 80/20 rule:
Your resume at 80% perfection sent today beats your resume at 100% perfection sent next week.
Because by next week, the role is filled.
What "good enough" actually means:
✅ No typos
✅ Tailored to the job description
✅ Numbers in your bullet points
✅ Clean formatting
✅ Correct contact information
That's it. You don't need:
❌ A complete portfolio overhaul
❌ Three people to review it first
❌ Perfect keywords for every possible scenario
❌ A redesign of your resume template
The perfectionism trap:
You're not protecting yourself by waiting. You're just procrastinating.
"I need to make it perfect" usually means "I'm afraid of rejection."
But you're guaranteed rejection if you never apply.
What successful students do:
They see a job. They spend 10 minutes tailoring their resume using Runway's Resume Tailoring feature. They apply.
Total time: 15 minutes from finding the job to submitting.
Not 3 days. Not "this weekend." Today.
When to actually wait:
Only wait if:
- The application deadline is weeks away
- You're genuinely missing a required certification they need
- You're in the middle of finals and literally cannot focus
Otherwise, apply now.
The opportunity cost:
Every day you wait to apply to Job A:
- 5 other jobs get posted
- Job A gets 50 more applicants
- Your odds of getting Job A drop significantly
