Every job is a chance to either:

  1. Learn a lot or

  2. Earn a lot

Garry Tan says it best.

If you're doing both, you're in the sweet spot.

But if you're doing neither, it's time to move on.

Here are a few other pieces of career advice to keep you growing:

Invest in Learning

Never stop adding new skills. Learning keeps you competitive.

The skills you build today become the opportunities you get tomorrow.

Build Confidence

Self-doubt will hold you back more than anything else. Believe in yourself.

Confidence isn't arrogance. It's knowing you can figure things out.

Network With Purpose

Your network opens doors. Build relationships that matter.

Connect with people who are 1-2 levels ahead of you, not executives who won't respond.

Don't Fear Failure

Failure is part of the journey. Use it to learn and get better.

Every successful person has failed multiple times. The difference is they kept going.

Work Smart AND Hard

Effort and strategy are a winning combo. Don't rely on one without the other.

Working 80 hours on the wrong things gets you nowhere. Work smart first, then add effort.

Act On Opportunities

When a good opportunity comes up, don't hesitate. Seize it.

Most people wait for the "perfect" time. The perfect time is now.

Remember:

Every job is a stepping stone.

Make sure you're getting something valuable from it - whether it's learning or earning.

And if you're not?

Don't settle. Move forward.

What this looks like in practice:

Your first internship might not pay well, but you're learning industry-specific skills that will 2x your salary at the next job. That's a win.

Your second job pays well but you're doing the same tasks every day with no growth. After a year, it's time to look for learning opportunities elsewhere.

Your third role offers both - great pay AND new challenges. Stay there and maximize it.

The trap:

Staying somewhere comfortable where you're neither learning nor earning significantly more.

You're coasting. And coasting means you're falling behind.

Do this today:

Look at your current situation.

Are you learning a lot? Are you earning what you're worth?

If the answer is no to both, start planning your next move.
