Most cover letters I see are 500+ words. Full paragraphs about your childhood dreams, your passion for the company mission, and every single thing you've ever accomplished.
Recruiters spend an average of 19 seconds reading cover letters.
If yours takes 3 minutes to read, they're not reading it.
Here's the cover letter format that actually works:
3 paragraphs. 250 words max. That's it.
Paragraph 1 (3 sentences):
Why you're applying + one specific thing about the company that excites you.
"I'm applying for the Marketing Analyst role at [Company]. I've been following your rebrand launch, and the way you're targeting Gen Z through TikTok is exactly the kind of data-driven creative work I want to do."
Paragraph 2 (4-5 sentences):
Your most relevant experience with ONE specific example and numbers.
"Last semester, I managed social media for our campus startup accelerator. I grew our Instagram from 200 to 3,500 followers in 4 months by analyzing posting patterns and creating content that actually resonated with students. Our event attendance increased 180% as a result."
Paragraph 3 (2 sentences):
What you're excited to contribute + call to action.
"I'd love to bring this same data-driven approach to [Company]'s social strategy. I'd be happy to discuss how my experience aligns with what you're building."
Total: 10 sentences. Under 250 words. Easy to scan.
What to cut:
Your life story
Generic statements about being a "hard worker"
Anything already on your resume
Flowery language about "passion" and "dreams"
Do this today: Open your current cover letter template. Cut it down to 3 paragraphs following this structure. If it's over 250 words, keep cutting until it's not.
Short, specific, and results-focused beats long and generic every time. You got this!
