You're doing everything right.

Applying to jobs where you fit 80%+ qualifications. Tailoring your resume. Following up.

But you're still getting no responses.

Here's what's actually wrong:

Your email is going to spam.

Not because you did anything wrong - because of how email filters work.

Why your emails end up in spam:

Reason 1: You're emailing from a free domain

Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail addresses get filtered more aggressively than custom domains.

Fix: At minimum, use [email protected]. Better yet, get a custom domain if you're serious about professional communication.

Reason 2: Your message triggers spam filters

Certain words and phrases flag spam filters:

"Amazing opportunity"
"Make money"
"Limited time"
Excessive exclamation points!!!
ALL CAPS ANYWHERE
Too many links

Fix: Keep language professional and straightforward. One link maximum.

Reason 3: You're sending the same message to multiple people

Mass emails get flagged as spam.

If you copy-paste the exact same message to 10 recruiters, email providers notice.

Fix: Customize each message. Change at least 30% of the text per email.

Reason 4: You have attachments

Unsolicited attachments (like your resume) often trigger spam filters.

Fix: Instead of attaching your resume, include a link to it (Google Drive, Dropbox, your website).

Or mention you're happy to send it if they'd like to see it.

How to check if you're in spam:

You can't know for sure, but signs include:

  • Zero responses after 10+ emails

  • No "read receipts" if you use email tracking

  • Generic bounce-backs

What to do instead:

Option 1: LinkedIn messages

Message recruiters directly on LinkedIn instead of email.

Option 2: Apply through the company system

Most companies have automated notifications when you apply through their ATS.

These go directly to recruiters and don't get spam filtered.

Option 3: Ask for the right email

If you find a recruiter's email online, verify it's current by checking their LinkedIn or the company directory.

Old or wrong emails = straight to spam or bounced.

Better follow-up strategy:

Instead of just emailing:

  1. Apply through the company portal

  2. Wait 48 hours

  3. Send a LinkedIn message (not email) referencing your application

  4. If you want to go above and beyond cold call them

  5. Keep it brief and professional

This bypasses email filters entirely.

Do this today:

Check your sent folder. Are you using a professional email address?

Review your recent messages. Are you using spam trigger words?

If you've been getting zero responses, switch to LinkedIn messages for your next 5 follow-ups.

You might not be getting ignored. You might just be getting filtered.
