Skills can be taught to anyone.
But character is already formed.
In hiring, I've learned that the person who gossips about their previous employer will eventually gossip about you. The one who makes excuses instead of taking responsibility will do the same when things get tough.
Here are 9 traits that aren't just nice-to-haves - they're predictors of who you can actually count on when it matters:
Kind. Means they treat the janitor the same way they treat the CEO.
Honest. Means they tell you about problems early, not after they've become crises.
Stays humble. Means they credit the team for wins and take personal responsibility for losses.
Doesn't gossip. Means they address issues directly with the people involved, not behind their backs.
Keeps promises. Means when they say they'll do something, you can stop thinking about it.
Takes responsibility. Means they focus on solutions, not blame.
Treats others with respect. Means they listen to understand, not just to respond.
Helps without expecting anything. Means they contribute to the team's success, not just their own advancement.
Does what's right even when it's hard. Means they have principles that don't bend under pressure.
The most successful teams I've worked with weren't necessarily the most talented.
They were the ones where you could trust everyone's character.
Character isn't about perfection - it's about consistency in how you show up when no one important is watching.
What this looks like in practice:
The person who gossips about their previous employer will eventually gossip about you.
The one who makes excuses instead of taking responsibility will do the same when things get tough.
The colleague who takes credit for team wins will throw you under the bus when something goes wrong.
But the person who:
Admits mistakes quickly
Gives credit generously
Shows up consistently
Treats everyone with respect
That's someone you can build with.
Do this today:
Think about the people you work with. Who you’re in class with.
Who demonstrates these traits consistently?
Those are the people you want on your team. Those are the relationships worth investing in.
