I've watched thousands of students job search over the past year.

The ones who succeed do things differently.

Here are the 3 mistakes I see every single day:

Mistake #1: Applying to jobs you're 40% qualified for

I see students apply to jobs requiring "3+ years Python experience" when they took one intro class.

You're wasting your time.

Why this fails:

ATS systems filter you out before a human ever sees your resume. Even if you get through, you can't fake 3 years of experience in an interview.

What to do instead:

Only apply to jobs where you meet 70%+ of the requirements.

Use Runway's match scores. If you're below 70%, you're not ready for that role yet.

Build the missing skills, then apply.

Mistake #2: Writing generic cover letters (or skipping them entirely)

"I am writing to express my strong interest in this position. I am a hard worker who is passionate about your company..."

Every recruiter has read this 1,000 times.

Why this fails:

It could apply to any job at any company. Shows zero research or genuine interest.

What to do instead:

If you write a cover letter, make it specific:

  • Mention a recent company initiative you noticed

  • Reference a specific project or problem the role will tackle

  • Connect your experience to their actual needs

3 paragraphs, 250 words max. Specific or skip it.

Mistake #3: Treating your job search like a part-time hobby

You apply to 5 jobs on Sunday. Then nothing for a week. Then 10 jobs the next Sunday.

Why this fails:

Inconsistency kills momentum. You forget to follow up. Jobs get stale. You lose track of what you applied to.

What to do instead:

Block 1 hour every weekday. Same time, every day.

Apply to exactly 5 jobs during that hour:

  • Filter by last 24 hours

  • Apply to 80%+ matches only

  • Use Resume Tailoring for each

  • Track everything

25 quality applications per week beats 50 random applications on Sunday.

The pattern I see in students who succeed:

They're selective (only apply to realistic matches)
They're consistent (apply every weekday, not in bursts)
They customize everything (resume, messaging, follow-ups)
They apply fast (within 24 hours of job posting)
They follow up (48 hours after applying)

The pattern I see in students who struggle:

They spray and pray (apply to everything)
They're inconsistent (binge apply on weekends)
They use the same resume for every job
They apply to week-old jobs
They never follow up

Same effort. Completely different results.

You got this!
