I get 10+ networking messages a week that all say the same thing:
"Hi Ford, I'd love to pick your brain about breaking into [industry]."
I ignore almost all of them.
Not because I don't want to help, but because "pick your brain" is code for "I want you to do unpaid career coaching with zero preparation on my part."
Here's what actually gets responses:
Instead of asking for their time with nothing in return, make it stupid easy for them to help you.
Bad networking message:
"Hey, I'd love to pick your brain about marketing. Do you have time for a call?"
Good networking message:
"Hey [Name], I saw your post about SEO strategy. Quick question: If you were starting today with zero followers, would you focus on LinkedIn or Twitter first? I'm debating where to invest my time."
Why this works:
Specific question (not "tell me everything you know")
Shows you actually follow their work
Takes them 30 seconds to answer
Easy to respond to via message (no call needed)
The rule: Ask for advice on ONE specific decision you're facing, not their entire playbook.
Examples that work:
"Should I take unpaid internship A or paid retail job B while I keep applying?"
"Would you recommend learning Python or SQL first for data analytics roles?"
"Is it better to have 2 strong projects or 5 smaller ones on my portfolio?"
One question. One decision. Easy answer.
Do this today: Find one person in your target industry on LinkedIn. Send them ONE specific question about a real decision you're facing. Not "can we chat" - just the question.
You'll be surprised how many people actually respond when you make it this easy.
