Here's what actually works:

A clean, simple, real background.

Best options:

✅ Plain wall (white, gray, or light color)
✅ Bookshelf with organized books
✅ Simple desk setup with minimal items
✅ Well-lit room with nothing distracting

What to avoid:

❌ Unmade bed visible behind you
❌ Piles of clothes or clutter
❌ Posters or decorations that are too casual
❌ Windows behind you (you'll be backlit and look like a silhouette)
❌ Virtual backgrounds (they look fake and distracting)

Why virtual backgrounds don't work:

They glitch. Your hair disappears. Your hand phases through the fake office when you gesture. It's distracting and screams "I didn't prepare a real space."

The 5-minute background fix:

Sit 2-3 feet from the wall behind you, not right against it. This creates depth and looks more professional than being pressed against a flat surface.

Lighting matters too:

Face a window or lamp. Light should hit your face, not come from behind you.
