You updated your LinkedIn headline. You added your experience. You even got a decent profile picture.
But recruiters still aren't finding you.
Here's why:
Your LinkedIn URL is something like: linkedin.com/in/john-smith-b47a92183
That random string of numbers at the end? It's a red flag that screams "I don't know how LinkedIn works."
More importantly, it's unsearchable and unprofessional.
Here's what it should be: linkedin.com/in/johnsmith or linkedin.com/in/john-smith-analyst
Clean. Professional. Easy to remember and share.
Why this matters:
When you apply to jobs and include your LinkedIn on your resume, recruiters click it. If your URL looks like a randomly generated password, it signals you're not tech-savvy enough to customize basic settings.
Plus, custom URLs rank higher in Google searches. When someone searches "John Smith marketing," your profile is more likely to show up.
How to change it (takes 2 minutes):
Go to your LinkedIn profile
Click "Edit public profile & URL" on the right side
Under "Edit your custom URL," click the pencil icon
Type your name (or name + your field if your name is taken)
Save
What to use if your name is taken:
FirstnameLastname + your field: john-smith-marketing
FirstnameMiddleLastname: john-m-smith
FirstnameLastname + credential: john-smith-mba
FirstnameLastname + university: john-smith-ucla
Other LinkedIn basics you should fix while you're at it:
✅ Profile photo: Professional headshot (not a selfie, not a group photo)
✅ Background banner: Not the default blue - use Canva to make a simple one related to your field
✅ About section: Not empty. 3-4 sentences about what you do and what you're looking for
✅ Featured section: Pin your best projects, articles you've written, or work samples

Update headline with skills, not just "Student at X" (1 minute)
Write 3 sentences in your About section (2 minutes)
