End of the interview. They ask:
"Do you have any questions for me?"
You say: "No, I think you covered everything!"
Interview over. You just lost the job.
Why "no questions" is a dealbreaker:
It signals:
You're not actually interested in the role
You didn't prepare
You're just going through the motions
You don't care enough to learn more
Always have 3-5 questions prepared.
Here's what to ask:
Questions about the role:
✅ "What does success look like in the first 90 days for this position?"
✅ "What's the biggest challenge someone in this role would face?"
✅ "Can you walk me through what a typical day or week looks like?"
✅ "How does this role contribute to the team's overall goals?"
Questions about the team:
✅ "How would you describe the team culture?"
✅ "What do you like most about working here?"
✅ "How does the team handle feedback and collaboration?"
✅ "What's the team working on right now that you're most excited about?"
Questions about growth:
✅ "What does career progression typically look like for someone in this role?"
✅ "Are there opportunities for professional development or learning?"
✅ "How does the company support employees who want to grow their skills?"
Questions about the company:
✅ "What are the company's priorities for the next year?"
✅ "How has the company changed in the time you've been here?"
✅ "What differentiates this company from competitors?"
The one question you should always ask:
"Based on our conversation today, do you have any concerns about my ability to succeed in this role?"
This gives you a chance to address doubts before you leave.
Questions to avoid:
❌ Anything you could easily Google
❌ "What does your company do?" (you should know this)
❌ Questions about salary/benefits in first interview (save for later rounds)
❌ "How soon can I get promoted?" (sounds entitled)
❌ "Do you check social media?" (red flag question)
❌ "What's the vacation policy?" (save for offer stage)
How many questions to ask:
First round: 2-3 questions
Second round: 3-4 questions
Final round: 4-5 questions
What if they really did cover everything?
Ask follow-up questions based on what was discussed:
"You mentioned [thing they said earlier]. Can you tell me more about that?"
or
"Earlier you talked about [project]. What's the timeline for that?"
Pro tip:
Take notes during the interview. Write down things they mention that you want to know more about.
When they ask for questions, reference your notes.
Do this today:
Write down 5 questions you'll ask in your next interview.
Bring them with you (on paper or pulled up on your phone before the interview).
Never say "no questions" again.
