"What are your salary expectations?"
This question makes everyone panic. Answer too high, you price yourself out. Answer too low, you leave money on the table.
I've seen students lowball themselves by $10K+ because they didn't know how to answer this.
Here's what NOT to say:
❌ "I'm flexible" (Translation: I'll take whatever you offer)
❌ "Whatever is fair" (They'll define "fair" as low as possible)
❌ "$50K" (You just anchored low and gave them no room to negotiate up)
Here's what actually works:
Option 1: Flip the question (Best for early conversations)
"I'm looking for a competitive salary based on market rates for this role. What's the budgeted range for this position?"
This makes THEM say a number first. Whoever says a number first usually loses in negotiation.
Option 2: Give a research-backed range (If you must give a number)
"Based on my research for entry-level [role] positions in [city], I'm seeing ranges between $60K-$75K. Given my experience with [specific skill], I'd be looking at the higher end of that range."
This shows:
You did your homework
You know your worth
You're anchoring high, not low
Where to find real salary data:
Glassdoor (look at entry-level for your specific role + city)
Levels FYI (for tech roles)
Your university career center
People in your network who recently got similar jobs
The key: Add 10-15% to the average you find. That gives you negotiation room.
Do this today: Look up salary ranges for 3 roles you're targeting on Glassdoor. Write down the range. Add 10%. That's your answer next time someone asks.
Don't guess. Don't lowball. Know your number.
