You spent an hour customizing your resume for a job.

You hit submit feeling good.

Then you notice it: A typo. Right there in your second bullet point.

The recruiter already saw it. And moved on.

Typos signal carelessness. If you can't proofread a one-page resume, how will you handle actual work?

Here's how to catch every mistake:

1. Read it backwards

Start from the last word and read each word individually going backward.

This forces your brain to see each word instead of skimming sentences.

2. Read it out loud

Your brain catches spoken errors better than visual ones.

If something sounds awkward when you say it, it probably is.

3. Use Grammarly (free version works)

Catches most typos, grammar issues, and awkward phrasing.

Not perfect, but better than nothing.

4. Wait 30 minutes, then read again

Fresh eyes catch more mistakes.

Never proofread immediately after writing.

5. Have someone else read it

A friend, roommate, career center advisor - anyone.

Other people spot errors you've become blind to.

Most common resume mistakes:

  • Their/there/they're

  • Your/you're

  • It's/its

  • Inconsistent tenses (past tense for old jobs, present for current)

  • Missing periods at end of bullets

  • Inconsistent formatting (some bullets with periods, some without)

The killer mistakes:

Misspelling the company name you're applying to
Wrong company name from copy-pasting
Dates that don't make sense (graduated 2025, internship in 2026)
Skills listed twice in different sections

Do this today:

Open your resume. Read it backwards word by word. Run it through Grammarly. Read it out loud.

Fix every single mistake before you send another application.

One typo can cost you the interview. Zero typos can get you the job.
