You landed a virtual interview. Great.

You prepared your answers. You researched the company. You're ready.

Then you log on and:

  • Your camera is pointing up at your ceiling

  • There's a pile of laundry behind you

  • Your audio keeps cutting out

  • You're backlit by a window so they can't see your face

You just lost the job before saying a word.

I've watched hundreds of virtual interviews go wrong because of fixable technical issues.

Here's how to actually set up for a virtual interview:

Camera Position:

Your camera should be at eye level, not looking up at you from your lap or down from above.

How to fix it: Stack some books under your laptop, or use a laptop stand. You want the camera to feel like you're making eye contact.

Lighting:

Don't sit with a window behind you. You'll look like a dark silhouette.

How to fix it: Face a window (natural light on your face) or use a desk lamp pointed at the wall behind your screen (creates soft, indirect light).

Background:

A messy room, a blank wall, or your unmade bed all send the wrong message.

How to fix it: Sit in front of a clean, simple background. Bookshelf, plain wall, or tidy room. Use a virtual background ONLY if it looks professional (no memes, no beach photos).

Audio:

Your laptop microphone probably sucks. Crackly audio is worse than bad video.

How to fix it: Use earbuds with a mic (AirPods work great). Test your audio 10 minutes before the call.

Internet Connection:

WiFi dropping mid-sentence kills your credibility.

How to fix it: Plug into ethernet if possible. If not, sit close to your router. Close all other apps and tabs. Tell your roommates not to stream during your interview.

The Setup Checklist (Do this 30 minutes before):

Test your camera and audio
Close all tabs except the interview link
Silence your phone
Put a "DO NOT DISTURB" sign on your door
Have water nearby (out of frame)
Pull up the job description in another window for reference
Join 2-3 minutes early (not 10 minutes, not right on time)

What to wear:

Dress exactly how you would for an in-person interview. Yes, even the bottom half (it affects your energy).

Eye contact in virtual interviews:

Look at the camera when you're speaking, not at their face on the screen. This makes it feel like you're making eye contact with them.

Do this today: Set up your interview space right now. Turn on your camera. Record a 30-second video of yourself. Does it look professional? If not, adjust your setup until it does.

First impressions happen in 7 seconds. Don't waste them on bad lighting.
