"What's your biggest strength?"

Most people answer with:

  • "Attention to detail"

  • "Strong work ethic"

  • "Good communicator"

These sound professional. But they get you rejected.

Why?

Everyone says this. And you're not backing it up with proof.

Here's what actually works:

Name a strength that's relevant to the role, then immediately prove it with a specific story.

Bad answer:

"My biggest strength is attention to detail."

(Okay, cool. So is everyone else interviewing.)

Good answer:

"I'd say my biggest strength is catching details others miss. In my last internship, I was reviewing our marketing budget spreadsheet and noticed a formula error that was inflating our costs by $8K. No one else had caught it in 3 months of reporting. I fixed it and built in validation checks so it wouldn't happen again."

Why this works:

Specific example with numbers
Shows real impact
Demonstrates problem-solving
Proves the claim instead of just stating it

More examples:

Bad: "I'm a strong communicator"

Good: "I'm effective at translating technical concepts for non-technical audiences. Last semester, I presented my data science research to business students who had no coding background. Instead of explaining the algorithms, I focused on the business implications and got rated 4.8/5.0 for clarity."

Bad: "I have a strong work ethic"

Good: "I'm reliable when deadlines matter. During finals week, our group project lead dropped the class. I took over, reorganized the remaining work, and delivered our presentation on time. We got an A and my teammates thanked me for keeping us on track."

The formula:

Strength + Specific story + Measurable result = Memorable answer

Do this today:

Think of your go-to "strength" answer. Now write down one specific story that proves it. Include numbers, context, and outcome.

Practice saying it out loud until it sounds natural.

Stop making claims. Start telling stories.
