You’re starting your summer internship.

First day, first week. You want to make a good impression.

So you sit quietly, wait for instructions, and avoid asking "stupid questions."

This is the worst thing you can do.

Here's what actually makes you stand out in your first week:

Day 1-2: Ask ALL the questions

The first few days are your free pass to ask anything.

Questions to ask immediately:

  • "What does success look like for me this summer?"

  • "Who should I go to for questions about [specific topic]?"

  • "What are the team's priorities right now?"

  • "How does the team prefer to communicate?"

Week 1: Take initiative on small things

Don't wait to be told. Look for gaps:

"I noticed we don't have a shared document for [thing]. Should I create one?"
"I finished that task. What else can I help with?"
"I have 30 minutes before our next meeting. Can I help with anything?"

The biggest first-week mistakes:

Staying silent in meetings - Ask clarifying questions, it's expected

Not taking notes - You won't remember everything. Write it down.

Pretending you understand when you don't - Ask for clarification immediately

Waiting for someone to assign you work - When you finish a task, ask what's next

Eating lunch alone at your desk every day - Build relationships, ask to join people

What great interns do in week 1:

Set up coffee chats with 5-10 people on the team
Volunteer for small tasks nobody else wants
Ask for feedback early and often
Send daily updates to their manager (even if not required)

The daily update email (optional but impressive):

"Today I worked on [task], completed [thing], and started [project]. Tomorrow I plan to [next steps]. Any feedback or other priorities?"

Takes 2 minutes. Shows you're organized and proactive.

The mindset:

You're not here to avoid making mistakes. You're here to learn and contribute.

Ask questions. Take initiative. Be visible.

The interns who get return offers aren't the ones who stayed quiet.

Do this today:

If you're starting an internship soon, write down 5 questions you'll ask in your first week.

If you're already in one, send your manager a quick update today on what you're working on.

Own your internship from day 1.
