You're tracking your applications in a spreadsheet.
Company name, date applied, status... maybe.
But you're missing the data that actually matters.
Most people track applications. Smart people track patterns.
What to track beyond the basics:
Column 1-5 (The basics):
Company Name
Job Title
Date Applied
Application Link
Status
Column 6-8 (The insights):
Where you found it (Runway, LinkedIn, company site, referral)
Match percentage (from Runway)
Did you customize resume? (Yes/No)
Column 9-11 (The follow-up):
Did you follow up? (Yes/No)
Follow-up date
Response received? (Yes/No)
Column 12 (The learning):
Notes (what worked, what didn't)
Why this matters:
After 20 applications, you'll see patterns:
"I got 4 interviews from Runway jobs, 0 from LinkedIn" → Focus on Runway
"Every time I customized my resume, I got a response" → Always customize
"Following up doubled my response rate" → Always follow up
"Jobs I applied to within 24 hours had 3x better results" → Apply faster
The metric that matters most:
Response rate = (Responses ÷ Applications) × 100
If your response rate is under 5%, something's broken in your strategy.
What good response rates look like:
5-10%: Decent, room to improve
10-15%: Good, you're doing things right
15%+: Excellent, keep doing what you're doing
Do this today:
Open your tracker. Add the columns you're missing.
Fill in the data for your last 20 applications.
Look for patterns. What's working? What's not?
Double down on what works. Stop doing what doesn't.
Data doesn't lie. Your feelings do.
