Small formatting details on your resume matter.
Date formatting is one recruiters notice immediately.
Bad date formats:
❌ 01/23 - 05/24 (confusing, is that January or day 1?)
❌ January 2023 - May 2024 (takes up too much space)
❌ 2023-2024 (too vague, which months?)
❌ Summer 2023 (be specific)
❌ 1/23 - 5/24 (even more confusing)
Good date formats:
✅ Jan 2023 - May 2024 (clear, concise, professional)
✅ January 2023 - May 2024 (if you have space)
✅ 01/2023 - 05/2024 (acceptable but less common)
For current positions:
✅ Jan 2024 - Present
✅ January 2024 - Present
Don't use "Current" - use "Present"
Consistency is key:
Pick one format and use it everywhere on your resume.
Don't mix "Jan 2023" with "January 2024" - choose one style.
Where dates go:
Right-align them on the same line as your job title and company.
Example:
Marketing Intern | ABC Company | May 2024 - Aug 2024
or
Marketing Intern, ABC Company | May 2024 - Aug 2024
For education:
Bachelor of Science in Marketing | Expected May 2026
or
Bachelor of Science in Marketing | Aug 2022 - May 2026
Quick formatting rules:
Dates should be in italics or regular text (not bold)
Use en-dash (–) not hyphen (-) between dates
Be consistent with spacing around the dash
Align all dates the same way (usually right-aligned)
Do this today:
Open your resume. Check every date.
Make sure they're all in the same format: Month Year - Month Year
Fix any inconsistencies.
It's a small detail that shows attention to detail.
