You found a job posting that looks perfect.
Now you're asking: "Is this company actually good to work for?"
Here's how to find out:
1. Check Glassdoor reviews (but read them carefully)
Don't just look at the overall rating. Read the actual reviews, especially recent ones.
Look for patterns:
Do multiple reviews mention the same problems?
Are negative reviews from current or former employees?
How does leadership respond to criticism?
Red flags:
All 5-star reviews that sound fake
Mass exodus of employees in reviews
Consistent mentions of toxic management
2. LinkedIn stalking (the professional kind)
Search "[Company Name] [Your Role]" on LinkedIn.
Look at:
How long do people stay in that role? (6 months = red flag, 2+ years = good sign)
Where do people go after leaving? (Better roles = good, career downgrades = bad)
Is there anyone from your school who works there? (Message them)
3. Check their recent news
Google "[Company Name] news" and check the last 6 months.
Red flags:
Layoffs
Leadership scandals
Lawsuits
Funding issues (for startups)
4. Look at their social media
How do they treat their employees publicly?
Do they celebrate employee wins?
Is their content authentic or corporate cringe?
Do employees engage with their posts?
5. Ask during the interview
Good questions to ask:
"What do you like most about working here?"
"How would you describe the team culture?"
"What's the biggest challenge someone in this role would face?"
Watch their body language when they answer.
The ultimate test:
Ask to speak with someone currently in the role (or a similar one) before accepting an offer.
If they say no, that's a red flag.
Do this today:
Pick 3 companies you're considering applying to.
Spend 10 minutes researching each one using this framework.
Cross off any companies with multiple red flags.
You're not desperate. You're selective.
