You're halfway through your internship.
You love the company. You want to come back full-time after graduation.
So you wait for them to offer.
Don't wait. Ask.
Here's how to actually get a return offer:
Week 6-8 of your internship:
Schedule a 1-on-1 with your manager and ask directly:
"I'm really enjoying my time here and would love to return full-time after graduation. What would I need to accomplish in the remaining weeks to be considered for a return offer?"
Why this works:
✅ Shows you're interested (they can't read your mind)
✅ Gives you clear goals to hit
✅ Puts you on their radar for conversion
✅ Most interns never ask, so you stand out
What happens next:
Best case: They say yes immediately or tell you exactly what you need to do.
Common case: They say "We'll evaluate all interns at the end and make decisions then. Keep doing great work."
Response: "That makes sense. Is there anything specific I should focus on or any feedback you have for me to improve my chances?"
Worst case: They say the company isn't hiring full-time or your performance isn't there yet.
Response: "I understand. What would I need to improve to be considered in the future?"
Final 2 weeks of your internship:
Ask again:
"I wanted to follow up on our conversation about a return offer. I've really valued my experience here and would love to continue contributing to the team after graduation. What are the next steps?"
If they offer you a return offer:
Don't accept on the spot if you have any hesitation.
"Thank you so much! I'm very interested. Can I have a few days to review the details and get back to you?"
Then evaluate it like any other offer.
If they don't offer:
"I understand. Thank you for the opportunity this summer. I'd love to stay in touch - would you be open to connecting on LinkedIn and potentially working together in the future?"
Keep the door open. Many companies hire interns later when they have headcount.
What makes you more likely to get a return offer:
✅ You completed your projects successfully
✅ You asked for feedback regularly and implemented it
✅ You took initiative beyond your assigned work
✅ You built relationships across the team
✅ You showed up consistently and professionally
✅ You made someone's job easier
What hurts your chances:
❌ You needed constant hand-holding
❌ You were late or unreliable
❌ You complained or had a bad attitude
❌ You didn't finish your projects
❌ You kept to yourself and didn't build relationships
The reality:
Not every company extends return offers. Some internships are genuinely just summer programs.
But you'll never know if you don't ask.
Do this today:
If you're currently in an internship and want to return, schedule a 1-on-1 with your manager this week.
Ask the question. Get clear on expectations.
Then execute like your full-time offer depends on it. Because it does.
