They offer you $60K.

You're so excited to finally have an offer that you immediately say yes.

You just left $3K-$5K on the table.

Most companies expect you to negotiate. They build room into their first offer.

Here's what you need to know:

1. They expect you to negotiate

If they offer $60K, they probably have approval to go up to $63K-$65K.

By saying yes immediately, you're signaling you would've accepted less.

2. The worst they can say is no

If you ask for more and they can't budge, they won't rescind the offer. They'll just say "This is our best offer."

You lose nothing by asking.

3. This compounds over your career

$3K more now = $3K higher baseline for your next job = $3K+ in raises over time.

Over 5 years, negotiating once can mean $15K+ in extra earnings.

How to actually negotiate:

Step 1: Always ask for time to review

"Thank you so much for the offer! I'm excited about the opportunity. Can I have a day or two to review everything?"

(Never accept on the spot, even if you want to)

Step 2: Research the market rate

Check Glassdoor, levels(dot)fyi, and ask people in your network what entry-level roles pay.

Step 3: Make your counter

"I'm really excited about this role. Based on my research of market rates for this position and my experience with [specific skill], I was hoping we could discuss $65K. Is there flexibility there?"

What makes a good counter:

10-15% higher than their offer (not 50%)
Backed by research or specific skills
Framed as a question, not a demand
Still expresses enthusiasm for the role

When NOT to negotiate:

  • Unpaid internships (there's no money to negotiate)

  • Government jobs with fixed pay scales

  • If the initial offer is already at market high end

  • If it’s a dream company that can open doors in the future

The line that works:

"I'm very excited about this opportunity. Based on my research and the value I'll bring with [specific experience], would there be room to start at [X amount]?"

Do this today:

If you have an offer pending: Research market rates, prepare your counter.

If you don't: Save this email. When you get an offer, use this script.
