You want to network with someone in your target industry.

You send: "Hi! Can I pick your brain about marketing over coffee?"

They ignore you. Here's why:

"Pick your brain" is code for "I want free consulting but haven't thought about what I actually need."

It's vague. It's a time commitment with no clear value. And they get 10 of these requests per week.

Here's what works instead:

Ask ONE specific question they can answer in 2 minutes.

Bad message:

"Hi Sarah, I saw you work in product marketing at Nike. I'm really interested in that field and would love to pick your brain about your career path. Would you be open to a 30-minute coffee chat?"

(Why should she say yes? What's in it for her? What do you actually want to know?)

Good message:

"Hi Sarah, I'm a marketing student at Georgia Tech interested in product marketing. Quick question: When you were interviewing for your role at Nike, what specific skills or projects made you stand out as a candidate? I'm building my portfolio now and would love your perspective."

Why this works:

Specific question (not vague "advice")
Shows you did basic research (you know where she works)
Easy to answer (2-minute response, not 30-minute commitment)
Gives context for why you're asking

What happens next:

Most people will answer your question via message. Some will offer to chat further if they like you.

If they give you a thoughtful answer, THEN you can ask for a brief call:

"Thanks so much for this insight! This is super helpful. If you ever have 15 minutes for a quick call, I'd love to hear more about your path into product marketing. Either way, I really appreciate you taking the time."

The progression:

  1. Specific question via message (low commitment)

  2. They respond (you've proven you're not wasting their time)

  3. Then ask for a call if appropriate (they're already invested)

More examples of good specific questions:

"What's one skill you wish you had developed more in college before starting your role?"

"When you were applying for data analyst roles, what project on your resume got the most interest from recruiters?"

"If you were a new grad interviewing at your company today, what would you make sure to highlight in your interview?"

"What's the biggest misconception people have about working in consulting before they start?"

What NOT to ask:

"What's it like working at your company?" (too broad)
"How did you get your job?" (Google exists)
"Can you refer me?" (before you've built any relationship)
"Do you have any advice for someone starting out?" (way too vague)

The mindset shift:

You're not "networking." You're asking smart questions to people who've been where you want to go.

Make it easy for them to help you.

Do this today:

Pick one person you want to reach out to on LinkedIn.

Don't ask to "pick their brain."

Ask them ONE specific question they can answer in 2 minutes.

Respect their time and they'll actually respond.
