You got an internship offer. Congrats!

But they want your answer in 72 hours...

And you're still waiting to hear back from two other companies you'd rather work for.

Here's how to handle this without burning bridges:

Step 1: Thank them and ask for an extension

Don't accept immediately out of panic. Don't decline without thinking.

Send this email:

"Thank you so much for the offer! I'm very excited about the opportunity. I'd like to take some time to review everything thoroughly and discuss with my family. Would it be possible to have until [date one week out] to get back to you? I really appreciate your understanding."

Why this works:

Shows you're taking it seriously (not desperate)
Most companies will give you at least a few extra days
Buys you time to hear back from other companies
Doesn't reveal you're waiting on other offers

Step 2: Immediately reach out to your other companies

Email or call the companies you're waiting on:

"Hi [Name], I wanted to follow up on my application/interview for [Role]. I have another offer with a deadline of [date] and would really love to consider your opportunity as well. Is there any chance I could get an update on my status or timeline?"

Why this works:

Creates urgency (they might speed up their process)
Shows you're a desirable candidate (other companies want you)
Gives them a chance to keep you in the running

Step 3: Evaluate the offer you have

While you're waiting, objectively assess:

The job:
- Will you learn valuable skills?
- Is it relevant to your career goals?
- Are the projects interesting?

The company:
- Good reputation in your industry?
- Strong mentorship and training?
- Positive Glassdoor reviews?

The compensation:
- Competitive pay for your market?
- Any benefits or perks?
- Housing stipend if needed?

The location:
- Can you reasonably work there for the summer?
- Is housing available/affordable?

Step 4: Make your decision

After your extension expires, you have three options:

Option A: Accept the offer

The other companies didn't come through, or this offer is actually great.

"Thank you for your patience. I'm excited to accept the offer and join your team this summer. What are the next steps?"

Option B: Decline gracefully

You got a better offer elsewhere.

"Thank you so much for the opportunity. After careful consideration, I've decided to pursue another opportunity that's a better fit for my career goals. I really appreciate your time and hope we can stay connected."

Option C: Negotiate (if appropriate)

The offer is close but not quite there.

"Thank you for the offer. I'm very interested in the role. Based on my research of market rates and my experience with [specific skill], would there be any flexibility to start at $X instead of $Y?"

Common mistakes:

Accepting immediately, then backing out later (burns bridges badly)
Lying about having another offer when you don't (they might call your bluff)
Asking for a month extension (unreasonable)
Ghosting them because you're uncomfortable declining

The exploding offer:

If they refuse to give you ANY extension and pressure you to decide immediately, that's a red flag.

Good companies understand students are applying to multiple places and need reasonable time to decide.

Do this today:

If you have an offer with a tight deadline, send the extension request email right now.

If you're waiting on other companies, let them know you have a deadline.

Don't make a rushed decision you'll regret.
