Happy End of Semester!

Welcome to your daily dose of curated early-career opportunities and tips! Your job search shouldn’t feel confusing, late, or based on luck.

Holiday break is here and the semester's over - perfect time to check your match scores for Spring/Summer internships and line up interviews for January.

Runway shows you your match percentage for every job, gives resume + skill-gap feedback, and helps you apply smarter instead of applying blindly.

You're searching for "entry-level" jobs and every single one says:

"Requirements: 2-3 years of experience"

How are you supposed to get experience if every entry-level job requires experience?

The job market is broken. But here's what you need to know:

Those "requirements" are wish lists, not deal-breakers.

I've talked to hundreds of hiring managers. Here's what they told me:

If a job says "2 years required" and you have:

  • 1 relevant internship

  • 2-3 solid projects

  • The core skills they're looking for

You should still apply.

Why companies do this:

They post inflated requirements hoping to attract overqualified candidates who will accept entry-level pay. It's a filtering tactic, not a hard rule.

Here's your strategy:

1. Check the "required" vs "preferred" sections
If "2 years experience" is under "preferred," you're definitely good to apply. If it's under "required," keep reading...

2. Count your relevant experience differently

  • Internships = experience

  • Class projects with real results = experience

  • Freelance work = experience

  • Side projects that solved real problems = experience

3. Lead with what you DO have
Your cover letter should immediately address: "While I'm early in my career, I've already [specific relevant accomplishment with numbers]."

The truth: Most "entry-level" jobs get filled by people with 0-1 years of actual experience who applied anyway.

Do this today: Find 3 jobs that say "2 years required." Apply to all of them. Lead your cover letter with your most relevant project or internship. You have nothing to lose.

The worst they can say is no. The best case? You get an interview for a job you thought you weren't qualified for.
