I review resumes every day through Runway. And I see the same sentence starter over and over:
"Responsible for..."
"Responsible for managing social media accounts"
"Responsible for data entry"
"Responsible for customer service"
Here's the problem: "Responsible for" tells them your job description, not what you actually accomplished.
Every candidate for that role had the same responsibilities. What did YOU specifically achieve?
Instead of describing your duties, describe your impact.
Bad: "Responsible for managing social media accounts"
Good: "Grew Instagram following from 800 to 4,200 in 5 months through data-driven content strategy"
Bad: "Responsible for customer service"
Good: "Resolved 50+ customer issues weekly, maintaining 4.8/5.0 satisfaction rating"
Bad: "Responsible for organizing team meetings"
Good: "Coordinated weekly team meetings for 15+ members, reducing project delays by 30%"
See the difference? One describes what you were supposed to do. The other proves what you actually did.
The formula: Action + Context + Result
Action: What you did (grew, resolved, coordinated)
Context: The specifics (Instagram, 50+ issues, 15+ members)
Result: The measurable impact (4,200 followers, 4.8 rating, 30% reduction)
Other weak phrases to eliminate:
❌ "Duties included..."
❌ "Tasked with..."
❌ "Helped with..."
❌ "Worked on..."
❌ "Assisted in..."
Strong alternatives:
✅ "Led..."
✅ "Developed..."
✅ "Increased..."
✅ "Reduced..."
✅ "Generated..."
✅ "Improved..."
✅ "Created..."
But what if you don't have numbers?
You do. You just haven't thought about it yet.
How many people did you work with?
How much time did your solution save?
How many tasks did you complete?
What was the before/after?
What percentage improved?
Even small numbers are better than no numbers.
Do this today: Open your resume. Find every bullet point that starts with "Responsible for" or "Duties included." Rewrite it using Action + Context + Result.
Your resume should prove you can deliver results, not just that you showed up to work.
