The first question in almost every interview:

"So, tell me about yourself."

Most people respond with:

"Well, I'm a junior at Ohio State studying marketing, I grew up in Cleveland, I have two siblings, I like playing soccer..."

They don't care about your life story...

What they're actually asking:

"Why should I keep talking to you instead of the other 50 candidates?"

The framework that works: Present → Past → Future

Present (15 seconds): Who you are professionally right now
Past (30 seconds): Relevant experience that proves you can do this job
Future (15 seconds): Why you want THIS role at THIS company

Total: About 60 seconds.

Example for a data analyst internship:

Present:
"I'm a statistics major at Penn State with strong experience in Python and SQL for data analysis."

Past:
"In my last internship, I analyzed 50,000 customer records to identify churn patterns and built a dashboard that the sales team still uses. I also completed a research project where I used machine learning to predict student outcomes with 85% accuracy."

Future:
"I'm looking for a role where I can work with real business data and turn insights into action, which is exactly what this position offers."

Example for a finance internship:

Present:
"I'm a finance major at UVA with experience in financial modeling and valuation."

Past:
"Through my student investment fund, I've built and pitched three full equity research reports that resulted in $50K in actual investments. I also completed a summer analyst role at a regional bank where I supported M&A deal analysis."

Future:
"I'm really interested in investment banking, specifically in the tech sector, which is why this role at your firm stood out to me."

Why this works:

Answers the question they're really asking
Highlights relevant experience immediately
Shows you researched the company
Keeps it to 60 seconds (not 5 minutes)
Makes them want to ask follow-up questions

What NOT to do:

Start with where you were born or your family background
List every class you've ever taken
Talk for 5+ minutes
Focus only on what you want (not what you offer)
Forget to connect it to THIS specific role

The test:

After you answer "tell me about yourself," the interviewer should think:

"This person is qualified, has relevant experience, and actually wants to be here."

Not: "That was a nice story, but why are they interviewing?"

Do this today:

Write out your Present → Past → Future answer for your target role.

Time yourself saying it out loud. Aim for 60-90 seconds.

Practice until it sounds natural, not memorized.

This is the first impression you make. Make it count.
